I’m never one for setting new year’s resolutions. For anyone that knows me, I have a strong belief in finding balance in life. I WILL eat the pudding, but I’ll also go to the gym. So with another new year starting, I have approached it as always – finding the balance! Looking at what is IN my control, and what isn’t.
Let’s start with my behaviour. What is IN my control? I get to choose HOW I spend my leisure time. I get to choose WHO I spend my free time with. Now every yin has a yang. So just as much as my control lies in who I spend my free time with, I have zero control over others’ opinion of me or other people’s beliefs and opinions. I have no control in how others treat me, but I DO have control of my boundaries!
With regards to feelings, it’s just awesome that we are in control of how we talk to ourselves, our self-talk. The impact of what we say to ourselves is huge. To give you a personal example. My young son is a brilliant footballer. He spends most of his free time training and working on his football skills. Yesterday, we went to play a bit of badminton, just for fun. 10 minutes in he walked off the court stating how rubbish he is. It ruined his mood for the following couple of hours. It was such a powerful example to me of the importance of changing our language, to be gentler on ourselves. This IS in our control. As my boy is only young, it is my responsibility to teach him this, just like us adults, need to teach this to our insecure innerchildren.
Aging and time, now that’s out of our control unfortunately. I am reminding myself that the way I spend my time IS in my control. DOOM SCROLLING, I’M TALKING TO YOU!! I’m asking myself how I can best use my time and keep the balance between my love of social media and not wasting my precious life away.
2025, let’s see how you pan out! With balance, remembering what control I have in the choices I make.
