As a counsellor, I have seen first-hand the toll that stress can take on individuals, especially small business owners, like me. The pressures of running a business, managing finances, and dealing with everyday challenges at work and home can often lead to overwhelming stress. I will explore the symptoms of stress, the impact it can have on small business owners, and how counselling can provide effective support and coping strategies.
While stress is a normal reaction to difficult circumstances, if it persists or becomes too intense, it can negatively impact both physical and mental well-being. Typical signs of stress consist of tiredness, irritability, headaches, muscle tension, and trouble focusing. Small business proprietors are especially prone to stress because of the challenges of managing a business, financial concerns, and the drive for success. This is a situation I know all too well.
The Impact
The impact of stress can manifest in various ways, affecting decision-making abilities, productivity, and overall well-being. Chronic stress can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and even physical health problems. I know I’m overstretched when my pustular eczema flairs up. This is my sign to notice and address my workload, and to look at the things I need to change.
Stress can also impact relationships with employees, customers, and loved ones. Recognizing the signs of stress early on is crucial to prevent it from escalating and causing further harm to your health.
What can I do for myself without counselling?
For a start, I make sure I have regular workouts booked in during the week. I commit to these sessions BEFORE my emotions step in and tell me to watch Netflix. When it’s in the diary, I have to do it. I create a balance between gentle work like Pilates/Yoga or pushing myself a little more by throwing a few punches. Combat class, not street fighting!
Alternatively, when the weather is nice and I have a gap in my hour day, I go for a quick brisk walk instead of playing on my phone. I might even stop at my favourite coffee shop. I feel like I’ve had a treat, and it gives me a little reset. It’s amazing what 20 minutes out of the office can do for those tough decision-making moments or for the millions of thoughts constantly running through my head.
Swop that rushed shower for a chill in the bath (if you have one). Why not invest in a bath board that holds a device so you can watch that episode of Friends while you soak in the bath?
It may sound silly, but these are the little things I can do every day that make me feel taken care of.
When a friend invites you for that round of golf, say yes. Plan an impromptu day out with the kids, doing whatever is cheap or better still, free. When you start searching, the inspiration will come.
The point is to bring back balance into your life.

How Counselling Can Help?
Counselling provides a safe and supportive space for clients to explore their stressors, emotions, and coping mechanisms. A counsellor can help clients identify the root causes of their stress, develop healthy coping strategies, and build resilience to better manage challenging situations. Through counselling, clients can gain a deeper understanding of themselves, improve their self-care practices, and learn effective stress management techniques. This does not just have to be on-on-one therapy. Colleagues can also benefit greatly from relationship counselling, working together in the interest of a better business partnership.
The Role of a Counsellor
A counsellor plays a crucial role in supporting small business owners through their stress and mental health challenges. By offering a non-judgmental and confidential space, a counsellor can help clients explore their thoughts and emotions, gain insight into their behaviours, and develop effective coping strategies that suit the individual needs of you, the client.
Stress is a common experience for small business owners, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Remember, you don't have to face your challenges alone. Together, we can work towards a healthier and happier future.
